Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS) is the successor to the United Presbyterian Church's Medical Mission work in the Southwest which began in 1901. In 1969, an independent PMS was formed as a New Mexico non-profit corporation to ensure continuation of the mission to provide health care services to the underserved communities throughout the southwest. Throughout its history, PMS has worked collaboratively with communities, providers, hospitals, as well as local, state, and federal government entities to develop programs which meet the needs of local residents.
Services include primary medical care, dental, behavioral health, children's services (Head Start, Early Head Start, Pre-K, Home Visiting, and Early Intervention Services), home care, hospice, and senior programs. PMS has approximately 1,100 employees working in almost 100 programs in 38 communities throughout New Mexico. The counties served are Bernalillo, Catron, Chaves, Cibola, Eddy, Lea, Luna, McKinley, Otero, Quay, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, San Juan, Socorro, Taos, and Torrance. Communities served by PMS are often located in remote, rural areas where residents have difficulty accessing services and many live at or below the poverty level.
With corporate offices based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Presbyterian Medical Services is not affiliated with Albuquerque-based Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Presbyterian Hospitals or Presbyterian Health Plan.
